World Maritime University: fees, fellowships and whether it is worth it
The IMO's own postgraduate university in Malmö. What the MSc costs all in, who actually wins the fellowships, how the accelerated route works, and what happens to your visa after graduation.
World Maritime University is not a business school with a maritime elective. It was founded in 1983 within the framework of the International Maritime Organization, the UN agency that governs global shipping, and it exists because the Government of Sweden and the City of Malmö made it possible. It only awards postgraduate degrees.
That matters later, when an employer or an immigration officer looks at your certificate. It also means the entry bar is set for people already established in a maritime career, not for fresh graduates.
Who you will be sitting with
| Founded | 1983, by the IMO |
| Alumni worldwide | 6,632 |
| Countries and territories represented | 171 |
| Average student age | 35 |
| MSc fellowships, Malmö class of 2026 | 89 |
| Female students in Malmö | 51% |
The average age of 35 is the number I would pay attention to. You will not be the oldest person in the room by a decade, which is a common and reasonable fear for officers going back to study after years at sea.
The flagship: MSc in Maritime Affairs, Malmö
Fourteen months, September to November the following year, 95 ECTS credits, split across three terms. Term one is foundation studies covering maritime policy and the IMO system of maritime governance, plus the environmental, economic and managerial sides of the ocean, and the start of your dissertation work. Term two is your chosen specialisation, one of seven. Term three is the dissertation itself, either on an issue in your own country's maritime sector or a broader current one.
Around a hundred senior maritime experts visit each year from governments, multilateral organisations, universities and companies. For someone whose professional network is currently made of people they sailed with, that access is a large part of the value.
Standard or accelerated
| Standard | Accelerated | |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | 14 months | 10 months |
| Structure | All three terms including foundation | Skips term one entirely |
| Fee, class of 2027 | $30,000 ($25,400 tuition plus $4,600 field study) | $26,675 ($21,950 tuition plus $4,725 field study) |
| All inclusive fee | $62,675 | $53,125 |
Accelerated entry requires all four of the following: a relevant postgraduate qualification already in hand, senior level directly relevant professional experience, English strong enough to skip the English and Study Skills Programme, and full documentation including detailed transcripts.
My honest read: if you already hold a relevant logistics, business or maritime adjacent postgraduate qualification, accelerated is worth pursuing. If your background is sea experience alone with no related academic credential, take the standard route and sit through the foundation term. The grounding in IMO governance is new territory for most officers, however many years they have sailed.

Fellowships, and an honest word about who gets them
Roughly one in three WMU students study fully sponsored, by their own company, their government or a national funding agency. A sponsor can pay everything directly to the university, including accommodation, a monthly living allowance and a flight home, or pay only the university fee while you cover living costs.
If you cannot secure funding at home you can apply for a donor funded fellowship through WMU. What donors typically look for is worth reading carefully before you build a plan around it:
- Your employer's commitment, including funding your initial flight to Sweden and re-employing you afterwards in a suitable role.
- Your age and nationality. Awards are usually reserved for government employees from the least developed countries, generally under 40.
- Donor priorities, which may favour particular regions, specialisations, or women applicants.
So be realistic. If you are an independently employed seafarer rather than a maritime administration employee, fellowship funding is a harder route for you specifically. Not impossible, but not the default path either. There is also an endowment fund, limited in scope, covering tuition only.
Shanghai and Dalian instead of Sweden
WMU runs an MSc in Maritime Affairs specialising in international transport and logistics, with shipping and finance content, in Shanghai with Shanghai Maritime University. It also runs an MSc in Maritime Safety and Environmental Management in Dalian with Dalian Maritime University. Both are 14 months.
Same WMU qualification without relocating to Sweden, which matters if Swedish living costs or the visa process are the obstacle. The trade off is one fixed specialisation track instead of Malmö's seven, and a smaller slice of the alumni and fellowship network.
The programmes people overlook
If you already work ashore in insurance, law adjacent roles or at a classification society, one of these is often a better fit than the flagship MSc, because you are adding a targeted credential rather than making a full career pivot. The partner name attached often carries as much weight with employers as the WMU name itself.
- MPhil in International Maritime Law and Ocean Policy, jointly with the IMO International Maritime Law Institute in Malta.
- Postgraduate diploma in Marine Insurance Law and Practice.
- Postgraduate diploma in Maritime Energy, focused on decarbonisation and the energy transition.
- LLM or postgraduate diploma in International Maritime Law, with Lloyd's Maritime Academy.
- Postgraduate diploma in Executive Maritime Management, with DNV.
There are also shorter options: the English and Study Skills Programme from June to September, EPEx short form study while you keep working, courses on maritime decarbonisation and AI applications in maritime studies, a summer academy, executive short courses, distance learning, and the MARI-WEL seafarer welfare programme built with the ITF Seafarers' Trust. If you are curious but not ready to commit, distance learning is a low risk way to try the teaching first.
Living in Malmö
Malmö is Sweden's third largest city, in Skåne, and it is a genuinely liveable place rather than a campus town. The Öresund Bridge puts Copenhagen and its international airport about thirty minutes away by train, so you are inside a large cross border region in everyday practical terms.
WMU provides accommodation at the Henrik Smith Residence, under 3 km from the main building, with lounges, study rooms, a sauna, laundry and indoor bicycle storage. During your first term you may have to share a room until the senior class graduates and moves out.
Staying in Sweden after you graduate
Your Malmö MSc is a Swedish qualification, a magisterexamen under Swedish law, so standard Swedish immigration rules apply to you as a graduate.
- The permit is called a residence permit to seek employment after completing your studies in Sweden.
- It lasts up to 12 months, as a fixed job seeking window, and is not renewable under the same category.
- Apply before your student residence permit expires.
- You must show you can support yourself for the permit period. The general student maintenance threshold is roughly SEK 10,000 a month or more, so confirm the current figure.
- Once you find work, you switch to a standard Swedish work permit.
A rule changed on 11 June 2026: to switch from a student permit to a work permit from inside Sweden, you generally need to have completed a programme of at least two semesters. Either WMU route clears that comfortably.
Before you contact admissions
WMU generally expects a bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline plus relevant professional experience. If your academic background is lighter but your professional experience is strong, you may still be considered case by case.
Have your transcripts, a current CV and a first draft of your motivation statement ready before your first email. A specific, prepared enquiry moves faster than a vague one, and admissions offices notice the difference. Enquiries go to [email protected], or [email protected] generally.
